What kind of career can I expect?

You will find work in many types of fields everything from gasoline-powered construction vehicles to giant diesel-powered earthmovers, mining trucks, cranes and pavers. These machines cost hundreds of thousands, and even millions of dollars.

What is the outlook for job opportunities and pay?
Currently there are more jobs available than technicians to fill them, Entry level technicians earn from $12-16 per hour and experienced technicians earn $18-25 per hour. Most employers offer health insurance and other benefits.

What will I learn to do?
The training outline includes care and use of tools, diesel engine theory and repair, principles and repair of fuel systems, lubrication systems, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, power trains, electrical systems, utilizing service manuals, heating ventilation and air conditioning systems, shop safety and administration, communication skills and occupational relations. You also get to learn on the job with local employers.

What else should I know?
A typical day is six hours of classroom and lab work with an emphasis on hands-on training. Students may work part-time in a related field while in the program.

“I’ve been in the diesel repair business for 30 years. Never have I seen the demand for technicians so high. We place 100% of our students and still have calls every week from employers looking for technicians. This trend is increasing and should for sometime in the future.”

Steve Rayburn, Heavy Duty Diesel Program Head

"Heavy duty diesel is a great trade to get into. The potential for good pay and training is great here as well.  I have been a diesel/hydraulics technician for 7 years and I am making over 50,000 a year at the age of 25.   I am sure it is the same here as it is anywhere else.  It all depends on which route you take after your schooling.  Remember though, any certification you can get no matter how small it is helps.  The thicker your resume the more your worth.
