CHAMPIONS AT WORK

SkillsUSA is a national organization serving high school and college students in preparation for careers in technical, trades, health, and service occupations. SkillsUSA has 266,000 members annually, organized into nearly 13,000 chapters and 54 state and territorial associations. The Selland College of Applied Technology SkillsUSA Chapter has an average annual membership of approximately 50 students and 10 faculty advisors.

SkillsUSA is an applied method for preparing America's high performance workers in public career and technical programs. It provides quality educational experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes, and communications skills. It emphasizes total quality at work: high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education, and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA also promotes understanding of the free enterprise system and involvement in community service.

SkillsUSA programs include local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. At the annual national-level SkillsUSA Championships, approximately 4,000 students compete in 73 occupational and leadership skill areas. SkillsUSA programs also help to establish industry standards for job skill training in the lab and classroom.

The time commitment for the student is very minimal in comparison to the returns. There are monthly meetings, two community service projects (approximately four hours each), and participation in fund raising projects. The returns are character development, reinforced self-esteem, enrichment of teamwork skills and professional development skills, exposure to industry, community service, life-long friendships and showing pride in the dignity of your work. If you are interested in excelling in any of these areas then this is the club for you!
